DescriptionUnder the 1834 legislation, Unions could provide 'outdoor' relief away from the workhouse. The exact level of relief was down to the discretion of individual Boards of Guardians, as was its particular form - whether in money or in kind. The apprenticeship of pauper children also formed an important part of outdoor relief.
