| Description | The Orders sub-committee was founded in March 1879, as a part of the Visiting and General Purposes committee, and originally consisted of four Guardians. It was created in order to 'supervise the Ordering of Articles for the Workhouse and that the Master be directed to give no orders without the sanction of this Sub-Committee except in very urgent cases.' This 'ordering of articles' covered a very wide range, from the supply of coal, ironwork and ladders to the workhouse, to the shoeing and veterinary care of the Union's horses.
However, the surviving volumes do not always reflect this diversity, many of the minutes for meetings simply refer to the workhouse requisition book being submitted, and the orders being examined by the sub-committee, rather than giving any more detail. The volumes are not indexed. |
