| Description | Similarly to the Western Road and Selly Oak House sub-committees (see GP B/2/3/15 and GP B/2/3/19), the Erdington House sub-committee reported to the House committee, was formed in 1912, and was responsible for administering the workhouse in this area of the union.
The workhouse at Erdington was originally part of the Aston Union (see GP/AS/2/8 for information on the workhouse pre-1912). Aston's first workhouse stood on the village green in Erdington, a building that now forms the public library. Built in the early 18th century, this workhouse continued to be used up until the 1860s, when a new building was opened in Gravelly Hill. Kept in use until well into this century, the building eventually became Summerfield Hospital. - The sub-committee continued to oversee all aspects of the workhouse's administration, supervising the movement of paupers into and out of the institution, the appointment of workhouse officials and staff, and the day to day maintenance of the buildings themselves. The minutes reflect this wide range of interests, and also include the regular reports made to the sub-committee by the workhouse officials. The volumes are indexed. |
