| Description | Following the purchase of 43 acres of land, Birmingham Union opened Marston Green Cottage Homes in 1880 for the purpose of caring for children away from the workhouse. The site included accommodation for 420 children, and their transfer to the site began in January 1880. The homes continued to operate until 1933, at which they were closed down. - In December 1879, in response to a Local Government Board Order, the Guardians appointed the Marston Green Homes Management committee. Consisting of 12 Guardians, the committee over-saw all aspects of the administration of the homes, including the hiring of officials and staff to run them, the provision of supplies, and the buying of equipment and furnishings. Decisions relating to individual children, and their movement into and out of the homes were also made by the committee. All of these duties are referred to within the minutes, which are not indexed.
