| Description | The vast majority of this collection is made up of minutes. Because the Birmingham Union collection is a great deal more complicated than that of either the Aston or King's Norton Unions, a slightly different cataloguing scheme has been adopted. The minutes have been divided into several categories, depending on which function of the Union they relate to - for example: GP B/2/3 contains the minutes from the various workhouse committees, whilst GP B/2/4 deals with those relating to the Union's infirmary and hospital committees.
Within each category, the minutes have been divided into those from the Union pre-1912 and those coming after that date, when the Birmingham Union amalgamated with the Aston and King's Norton Unions. As the structure of the Union altered so radically around this time, it was felt that the minutes should be separated in a way that would suggest that change. The typical structure of the list is to have the most important, pre-1912 committees within each category coming first, followed by the lesser and sub-committees of the period. The catalogue then continues with the major, post-1912 committees for each Union function, before again moving down through the hierarchy. |
