| Description | The Non-settled Poor Ledger shows the other side of the relationship detailed above, at GP B/3/5. Rather than the paupers resident elsewhere, these ledgers detail those paupers who lived within the Birmingham Union, but were in fact chargeable to (or 'settled on') another Board of Guardians. Again, once the union of settlement had agreed to pay for their maintenance, the Birmingham Guardians would then give the paupers relief directly, before claiming it back.
The ledgers contain entries in alphabetical order, according to the name of the union. In the debit column of each page, the name of the pauper, the date at which a payment to them was made and the amount are listed. Against them, in the credit column, is the date on which the union of settlement repaid Birmingham Union, along with the amount, often, several earlier payments were repaid at once. As well as being in largely alphabetical order, the volumes are indexed. |
