| Description | This volume contains information on applications made by the poor for out-relief, and would be the document presented to the Guardians by the Relieving Officer from which they would make the final decision on the level of relief in each case. Each entry deals firstly with the personal details of each applicant, and their immediate family, giving their names, ages and place of residence. Details of the applicant's occupation and their most recent employer are also given, and this is followed by information on the individual's state of health and cause of their destitution. These initial entries end with the final decision of the Guardians, and the level of relief given (if any) is entered. However, for many of the applicants, further applications for poor relief are also listed, particularly in the case of those who are seriously ill and requiring long-term medical treatment. - Originally, this volume would have been part of a much longer sequence, and application books would have been kept for each of the four relief districts in operation at this time. Unfortunately, only this single volume now survives. An application book for the King's Norton Union is also extant, and may serve useful for the purposes of comparison (see GP KN/25/1). The volume is not indexed. |
