| Description | Reception orders are the papers necessary for the admission or transfer of patients to All Saints Mental Hospital. Each order is given by a Justice of the Peace, directing the asylum to receive the patient. It includes personal and medical history and details of physical and mental condition, as well as a medical certificate signed by a doctor. Sometimes an adjudication is included showing which parish is to bear the cost of the patient's treatment. If the patient is in the hospital for private treatment there is a form with the next of kin undertaking to pay the patient's upkeep and burial costs. Most reception orders are for pauper lunatics and a few private patients, and there are also a small number of criminals sent to the asylum by the Crown. The reception orders cover the period 1850-1922 but the records are incomplete, with 11 boxes badly damaged. |
