DescriptionJanice talks of her long and varied career in children’s nursing starting from working in a nursery in Sussex after being pushed into it by her mother and how she progressed through nursery nurse training to undertaking her children’s nurse training. She talks of some strict rules and difficult sisters that she encountered. After qualifying she worked in different hospitals and in children’s wards and on a neonatal ward. She talks of how one children’s ward they didn’t wear uniforms but wore Laura Ashley dresses. She focuses on the home visiting service she developed where she went out to visit babies in their homes and setting up a home oxygen therapy service for premature babies. She sees this work as a privilege and a challenge. She emphasises the importance of empathy in nursing.
