DescriptionJoanna Calder discusses her journey into children's nursing, starting with her training as a general nurse and finding joy in caring for vulnerable immigrant children in a deprived area. She talks of how she valued the support and knowledge from skilled nurses when she was working on a very progressive bone marrow transplant ward and how rewarding as well as distressing the work could be. She talks of the challenges of caring for children with complex social care needs and her time caring for children with HIV and Aids. She talks of challenging norms and standing up for the best interests of children. She talks of working in Accident and Emergency and the difficulties of caring for and managing children who had been abused and her time working in palliative care. She shares her own story of having leukaemia and how this has ‘enriched her soul’ and how she now works in research, teaching and providing lived experience input into various charities.
