| Description | Professor Imelda Coyne talks of how she attracted to children's nursing due to her fondness for children and she describes her journey as a student nurse in Ireland and the responsibility you carried as a student nurse and how after qualifying she worked for a year on a ward caring for children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus and then ‘let go’ by the hospital as part of cut backs. She talks of how this triggered a move to England to do her general nurse training and then working in adult intensive care after she had qualified. She talks about working in various wards and settings including children’s cardiac care, neonatal intensive care and gastrointestinal care before moving to be a nurse tutor, eventually ending up doing her PhD. She talks of moving back to Ireland, and the challenges of completing her PhD and how sh eventually moved to Trinity College Dublin where she now works. She talks about how her focus has been on both family centred care and also on ensuring that the voice of the child is heard. She talks with passion about children’s voices and how has done much work to improve this in Ireland. |
