TitleInterview with Faith Gibson
LevelFile
Date2024
DescriptionProfessor Faith Gibson talks of her journey to becoming a professor (of child health and cancer) and her contributions to developing evidence about supportive care for children with cancer. She reflects on why she didn't pursue children's nursing immediately, despite knowing she wanted to work with children from an early age. She talks of starting out as a general nurse and her journey into children's nursing, mentioning how her placement experience in children’s ward and on a cancer ward when she was training as an adult nurse made her want to combine these two areas. She notes that this was because there was a contrast between the task-oriented approach in other areas and people-centered approach in children's wards and cancer units, where caring for patients and families was paramount. She describes being marginalised and rejected for job opportunities due to her accent and background and that she had to work hard to fit in. She highlights the importance of family-centered care and the need for flexible spaces to accommodate children's needs. She reflects on her contributions to cancer care, focusing on supportive care such as managing fatigue and improving hospital environments.
