| Description | Professor Bertha O’Chieng discusses how she trained as an adult nurse but straight after qualifying she moved into children’s nursing in a children’s intensive care unit. She talks of the warm welcome and the very supportive and friendly team. She talks of the fast track 6-month course she undertook to become a children’s nurse and how one particular child tipped her thinking from downstream to upstream thinking. She talks of undertaking her Masters course in Public Healt and how this and her Masters in International relations gave her a deeper appreciation of factors that influence children’s health. When she transitioned from clinical practice into academia she led the development of the intensive care curriculum within the children’s nursing course. Her PhD and her ongoing research and engagement led to her current role as Professor of Integrated Health and Social Care and her passion for spreading understanding of the importance of understanding the influence of the community on the child as well as the family. She also talks of some of the challenges of being a Black woman of African descent within the nursing profession and within academia and how she experienced discrimination and how she now sees herself as a role model for others. |
