| Description | Sarah Parry talks about her journey from being a nursery nurse to becoming a children’s nurse. She talks about working in paediatric intensive care after she trained and how she built up a skill set but that she missed the direct interaction with children, so she moved into working on the surgical unit for babies. At this time she started running projects and audits and benchmarking practice. She was asked to help develop either a pain service of a cardiac service and despite her interest in pain management she decided to take the post developing the cardiac service. She loved this work and put a lot of energy into developing a holistic service for children and families. She shares some of her memories of working in cardiac. Following this, she took up the post to develop the pain service. She talks of how the service has developed and the shift towards being much more holistic but how staff shortages and differences in skills mix influences what can be delivered. She talks of her involvement with NICE and her role as a specialist advisor to the CQC. She finishes by talking about the importance of having registered children’s nurses caring for children and the potential for apps to empower children and families in their care. |
