| Description | Professor Joan Simons shares her experience of undertaking the combined nurse training (adult and child) in Dublin in the 1980s and recalls the lowly status of student nurses within that training. She explains that a natural affinity for children led to a fulfilling career in children's nursing. Following qualification, the lack of job opportunities in Ireland meant she went to work in England on a burns and plastics ward. She talks of the culture shock in changing countries and seeing different practices. She goes on to talk of her career and her drive to gain knowledge. She talks of the courses she undertook including a PGDE and a PhD. Both were seminal to her roles in academia and her current senior leadership role. She talks about how nurse education has changed and how the mantra is ‘seek first to understand and then to be understood' has been helpful in her management and leadership roles. |
