AdminHistoryWith the Rapid Growth of the Crippled Children's Union since its formation in 1899 came the urgent need to increase funds. Frank Mathews realised there was a great potential to tap into local industry and the general public. To this end a meeting was called on 2nd October 1905 in the Hurst Street Mission Chapel to officially form a "Workingmen's Committee" to raise funds and raise awareness of the institution. Mr A E Wort took the post of Secretary and held it for nearly the next 50 years. Reportedly it had been informally founded nine days earlier: Messrs Hogg, Styles, Mellor, Grainger, Smallwood, Potter, Sutton and Wort were invited to the home of Frank Mathews for a visit to the Cadbury Works and tea, followed by a round table conference hoping to be able to interest those there to form a committee to tap sources he may not be able to reach. Reportedly all but one of these gentlemen were fathers of cripples.
