Applicant overview: Women on the Move was established in 1998 to 1) provide an opportunity for women leaders in voluntary, community and public agencies in the city to examine their political positions, thinking and identity, 2) provide an opportunity for women leaders to meet women from other agencies and communities in the city to discuss issues that are a source of sectarian conflict in the city, 3) develop insight and understanding of the diverse nature of communities in the Derry City Council area, and how different minorities experience living in the city, 4) access additional information through speakers and study visits to cities in the south of Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales, which will show how cities elsewhere are developing structures and strategies that are inclusive of minorities, 5) explore what is meant by the principles of equality, diversity and interdependence, and how the city can develop as a pluralist society where differences are not abolished but are recognised and expressed in such a way that they lose their power to wound, hurt or oppress, 6) make recommendations and develop a strategic set of actions that can be fed back into the various agencies represented by the participants, and 7) examine ways in which women and women's groups can increase their involvement in decision making and civic participation in the city at all levels. Nature of support: In 1999 on the advice of Gender Programme Relevant Trustees the Trust approved a single grant of £4,500 for 1999/2000 towards the running costs of the programme.
