| Description | Grant file containing correspondence, minutes, agendas, newspaper cuttings, leaflets, accounts and funding requests related to Birmingham Settlement's Money Advice Centre (MAC). Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Southfield Trust. Applicant overview: Birmingham Settlement set up a pilot scheme called the Money Advice Centre in 1970. The centre was established primarily to offer debt counselling, though the subject area expanded to include tax, insurance, investment and personal loans. Referrals to the pilot scheme originated from the Citizens' Advice Bureau, Housing Advisory Service and Birmingham Social Services Department. The pilot scheme was generally successful and continued its original debt advisory work while carrying out research and interventions in the community. Nature of support: In 1972 the Trust approved a single interim grant of £500 to MAC for running costs. The costs of a major conference on debt were underwritten by the Trust in 1974. In 1976 the Trust made a grant of £2,500 to cover a shortfall in county council support. A shortfall of £1,182 was topped up by the Trust in 1977. Similar top-ups occurred throughout the early and mid 1980s. In 1979 a grant of £6,000 was made to allow MAC to develop the service at a national level. In 1982 Southfield Trustees recommended that £2,000 be allocated to the expansion of debt counselling work by MAC.
