| Description | This volume performs a number of roles in that it records registers of pupils for different purposes and at different dates, The front of the volume records 'a list of the boys that have been placed out as apprentices from the Charity School in Birmingham', which records the pupil's name, their master (to whom the child was apprenticed and sometimes their trade) and the date. The lists records information for both boys and girls. At first, this list is in simple chronological order with the information for both boys and girls mixed. Later in the volume, the list is organised alphabetically by the child's name and the there is a separate list for boys and girls. Halfway through the volume there is a list of deaths (covering the period 12 March 1741 - 07 October 1781), which records the name of the child that has died and the date.
At the rear of the volume, there is 'a list of the children that have been admitted into the Charity School from the 12th April 1743 and by whom they were elected'. This list records the date and the pupil's name, the name of the subscriber [nominator] and (in later entries) the pupil's age. After this list, there is a 'census' of all the pupils at the school on the 31 July 1724 and it goes on to record all the children that are admitted up to 9th May 1738. A similar census appears in the volume, taken on the 30th December 1783. The final list to appear in the volume is 'a list of Green children [probably children put in the school by Fentham's trust] put into the charity school, by whom put in and to whom put out' which records, alphabetically, the name of the child, who put them into the school and to whom they went out when they left. This list covers the period between the mid 1750s and the late 1770s. |
