| Description | Files and correspondence relating to tenders to supply coins to Greece in collaboration with Imperial Chemical Industries (I.C.I.) Metals Limited and The British Royal Mint. The Greek government invited tenders for coin production in 1929-30 and 1938. In 1930, the Mint, Birmingham, Limited submitted a joint quotation with I.C.I. Metals Ltd. for the production of cupro-nickel coins to the Royal Mint. This quotation was included in a combined tender by The British Royal Mint for production of cupro-nickel, nickel and silver Greek coin. The Royal Mint was awarded the contract for production of nickel and silver coin, but the contract for the production of cupro-nickel coin was awarded to the Austrian Mint. The Birmingham firms do not appear to have been involved in manufacture of coin for this contract. In 1938, the Mint, Birmingham, Limited and I.C.I. Metals submitted another joint quotation through the Royal Mint for the production of aluminium alloy coinage. The tender was not successful. The files in this sub-series also include enquiries from companies wishing to be of assistance in the shipment of coin to Greece and some correspondence regarding a quotation for a copper tube contract in 1931. |
