| Description | The volumes of MS 2126/3/5d/8/2 form a very complete series of rentals running from 1854 to 1970. During this period there are three distinct and significant changes to internal arrangement of the information in the volumes:
1. Volumes MS 2126/3/5d/8/2/1 - 15:
Annual; rents collected at Lady Day (25 March) and Michaelmas (29 September).
Divided into 5-7 sections, the ordering of all but a. is inconsistent: a. Edgbaston Rental [Domestic Properties]; b. includes farms, pasture , individual gardens, inns, private roads, stables, mills, fisheries, cottages, and "land to be let on lease"; c. cottages and gardens; d. tithes; e. Harborne Rental; f. new rents; summaries/totals and approval signatures.
Arrangement of the Edgbaston rental section is roughly chronologically by date of "Commencement of Lease". There may have been a stand alone index to the "Consecutive Number" or "Lessee Columns". Arrangement of the farms etc section alphabetical by tenant's surname.
Basic column headings are: Progressive Number; Commencement; Term of Years; Expiration; Consecutive Number; Original Lessee; Present Lessee; Description of Property, and where situate [usually simply a road name]; Arrears; Half Year's Rent due Lady Day, [Year]; Total Due; Property Tax Allowed; Clear Amount to be Received; Remains in Arrear; Half Year's Rent due Michaelmas, [Year]; Total Due; Property Tax Allowed; Clear Amount to be Received; Remains in Arrear. Final Column used for notes about expiries etc.
2. Volumes MS 2126/3/5d/8/2/16 - 27:
Half-annual; rents collected either at Lady Day or Michaelmas.
Divided into 2 sections, the ordering within section b. is inconsistent: a. combined rental [i.e. Edgbaston and Harborne domestic and farms etc]; b. summaries: of additions/increases (including tithes), deductions/decreases, of cottages and gardens, and of the whole rental
Arrangement of the combined rental section is alphabetical by surname of "current Lessee".
Basic column headings remain as for volumes MS 2126/3/5d/8/2/1 – 15.
3. Volumes MS 2126/3/5d/8/2/28 - onwards:
Content and arrangement remain much as in volumes MS 2126/3/5d/8/2/16 - 27 but with a formalised "cottage and garden" rental section.
Columns headed: N[umber] of Receipt; [Date Lease] Term Expires; Situation; Arrears Brought Forward; Half Years Rent; Total Due; Deduct Property Tax; Clear Amount to be Received; Amount Received; Remains in Arrear; Remarks.
The "Cottages and Gardens" section is divided into: a. Botanic Gardens; b. Malthouse Meadow Gardens; c. Swan Gardens; d. Waterloo Gardens; e. Sundry Gardens (Bear Lane, Mass House, Orchard); f. Cottages and Gardens on the Harborne Estate; e. Cottages and Gardens let weekly, 1/2 yearly and yearly.
4. From MS 2126/3/5d/8/2/134 there are frequently two volumes for each half year and from MS 2126/3/5d/8/2/177 there is a run of separate cottage rentals which have been placed in this list chronologically with the corresponding main rental. |
