The majority of the material dates from the 1980s and 1990s and relates to Birmingham.
The material is arranged into sections that reflect why Vanley Burke has collected them. A separate section for publications contains original works by black authors and poets, such as Su Andi and Len Garrison, some of whom have written a personal dedication to Burke in the inside covers. Performers, poets, authors and comedians are listed under their own names, or the name of the artistic collective, where possible. Where material relates to more than one person or collective the material has been kept with similar material, therefore there is a section for festivals and workshops and conferences.
