| Description | Following the verdict in favour of Boulton & Watt in the Court of Common Pleas in December 1796, Jabez Hornblower and Stephen Maberly and their supporters sought a new trial. The engineer Joseph Bramah, who had appeared as a witness for the defendants, produced a long pamphlet defending Hornblower and Maberly and arguing for a new trial (MS 3147/2/44). However in February 1797 the Court decided that there should not be a new trial (MS 3147/2/45). Hornblower and Maberly then sought to have the case re-tried by taking out a Writ of Error through the Court of Kings Bench. This small bundle contains papers concerning the verdict and the application for a new trial. The following document listed in the original List of Contents was not found: "Letter to a Cornish Miner." For drawings of Hornblower and Maberly’s engines, see "Designs by William Murdock, Atmospheric and Other Engines, Drawings for Court Cases," Portfolios MS 3147/5/1353b and MS 3147/5/1354c. |
