Description
Newspapers were an important means by which Boulton & Watt and their rivals sought to publicise their arguments. The Sherborne and Yeovil Mercury and General Advertiser carried articles and advertisements by Boulton & Watt and Jonathan Hornblower and his partner John Winwood, as it had a large circulation in Cornwall. The Mercury and the Exeter Gazette also carried reports of the action against Edward Bull in 1793. The Times carried a report of the decisive verdict in the Court of King’s Bench in the action against Jabez Hornblower and Stephen Maberly which effectively established the validity of James Watt’s patent. Boulton & Watt collected copies of these newspapers for reference during their legal proceedings and their attempts to win over the Cornish mining industry.
