| Description | Letters from Thomas Barnes, Boulton & Watt’s North-Eastern agent, from 1794 to 1798. The majority of the letters are addressed to and docketed by John Southern, the head of the Drawing Office. Many of the letters contain sketches and drawings. The final two letters, of 16 November and 18 December 1798, concern iron rails made by Boulton & Watt for an iron waggon railway for Walker Colliery.
The letters are dated as follows: Nos. 1-5. 1794 Nos. 6-25. 1795 Nos. 26-37. 1796 Nos. 38-50. 1797 Nos. 51-61. 1798
The covering note for this bundle records the existence of a second bundle of letters from Barnes, dating from 1799 to 1800. This later bundle is no longer in the collection; indeed, the letters we do have may only have survived because at some point they became mixed up with the General Correspondence.
For further letters from Barnes, see letters written on behalf of Charles Brandling in the General Correspondence. |
