| Description | Letters from John Rennie from 1786 to 1793. During this period Rennie worked for Boulton & Watt as a millwright in London, but the arrangements between them were very informal, as Rennie was technically in business on his own. He also acted as their London agent, advising customers about engines and passing on enquiries to Boulton & Watt. He also travelled around the country – this bundle includes letters from Scotland, Lancaster and Bishop Stortford.
Most of the letters are addressed to John Southern, but some are addressed to James Watt. However all the letters are docketed by Southern and were kept by him. The bundle includes letters from Rennie’s assistants Charles Taylor and Meredith Jones. Up until 1798, there are two series of Rennie’s letters; one to James Watt, and this series of letters that were answered by John Southern.
The letters are dated as follows: Nos. 1-6. 1786 Nos. 7-15. 1787 Nos. 16-19. 1788 Nos. 20-29. 1789 Nos. 30-32. 1790 Nos. 33-36. 1791 Nos. 37-50. 1792 Nos. 51-65. 1793 |
