| Description | Letters from John Rennie from 1794 to 1797. During this period Rennie worked for Boulton & Watt as a millwright in London, but the arrangements between them were very informal, as Rennie was technically in business on his own. He also acted as their London agent, advising customers about engines and passing on enquiries to Boulton & Watt. He also travelled around the country – this bundle includes letters from Lancaster and Newbury.
Most of the letters are addressed to John Southern, but some are addressed to James Watt and James Watt Jr. However all the letters are docketed by Southern and were kept by him. The bundle includes letters from Rennie’s assistant John Lithgow. Up until 1798, there are two series of Rennie’s letters; one to James Watt, and this series of letters that were answered by John Southern.
The letters are dated as follows: Nos. 1-22. 1794 Nos. 23-30. 1795 Nos. 31-32. 1796 Nos. 33-36. 1797 No. 37 1798 |
