| Description | Letters from John Southern from 1800 to 1806. John Southern was employed by Boulton & Watt as an assistant to James Watt and an engineer in 1782. He worked in the Drawing Office at Watt’s house at Harper’s Hill and at Soho Manufactory, and he also travelled round the country working on various engines. Southern became head of Boulton & Watt’s Drawing Office at Soho Manufactory. The letters are addressed to James Watt Jr., M. R. Boulton and Boulton & Watt, and one letter addressed to Gregory Watt. Some were written by Southern at Soho, but there are also letters written during visits to London, Peterborough and Preston.
