DescriptionLetters from John Southern from 1812 to 1815. John Southern was employed by Boulton & Watt as an assistant to James Watt and an engineer in 1782. He worked in the Drawing Office at Watt’s house at Harper’s Hill and at Soho Manufactory, and he also travelled round the country working on various engines. Southern became head of Boulton & Watt’s Drawing Office at Soho Manufactory.

The letters are addressed to James Watt Jr. and Boulton Watt & Co. Many were written by Southern at Soho, but there are also letters written during visits to London, Alfreton, Leamington, Oakhill and Wales.

The letters are dated as follows:
