| Description | Letters and papers concerning Boulton Watt & Co.’s opposition to a bill laid before Parliament in 1809 to incorporate the proposed Gas Light & Coke Company. Boulton Watt & Co.’s opposition was based on the assertion that the company would gain a virtual monopoly on all forms of gas lighting. The company’s defence was that Boulton Watt & Co. had made little progress with large scale lighting and gas supply, and had restricted themselves to installations for individual factories. Boulton Watt & Co. drew on various close associates and expert witnesses, and they presented a great deal of information on William Murdock’s work as evidence. Their opposition to the bill proved successful. Nos. 1-23. Letters and Memoranda. Nos. 24-35. Papers.
Many papers and pamphlets about the bill were printed. These will be found in the next bundle, 3/481. |
