LevelSeries
Date1776
DescriptionLetters and papers relating to the Carron iron works, near Stirling in Scotland, from 1776. The works was established by John Roebuck and others, and began producing iron in 1760. Much of the machinery was designed by John Smeaton. In 1766 Robert Mackell and Watt erected an atmospheric engine at the works. In 1776 the owners of the works sought to improve the water supply. One of the options suggested by John Smeaton was installing a new engine of Watt’s design. Watt was consulted, and instead of suggesting a brand new engine, he recommended altering the existing engine and pumps and carrying out other improvements such as enlarging various pools. He did however recommend buying a new engine if the works ever expanded.
