Dear Sir
I wrote to you Last Post to acknowledge the reception of your two letters dated the 7th and 9th instance since which I am favoured with yours off the 12th in conjunction with Mr wilsons to whom I cannot write this post nor to Mr Jenkins but I will not file upon next if I was in Cornwall I should tell Phillips that Mister Jenkins had done me a favour and that two in the most handsome manner in so much that I should feel myself acting like a man and why are they of favour if I did not in some instance show Mr Jenkins that I had a grateful sense of it and now I have a great affection and sincere friendship for Mr Phillips yet I cannot act otherwise than to grant Mr Jenkins the favour he requests in a letter I have received from him by this day's post in which he says I shall be greatly obliged to you for the favour of your an Mr what's interest for supplying we'll virgin and The United minds with coals and deals and timber. I can only promise for myself but as I have obtained Mr wilkinsons leave to dispose of his interest I suppose I'll give that to Philips or suppose we add our two and wilkinsons one share equals free shares and provide them between something something I cannot bring myself to act dishonestly or ungratefully never do I believe Phillips would wish me to do it in a sack of interest and therefore I hope you will consent to give Mr Jenkins some part of the interest appertaining to the aforesaid free shares
as Mr Buchanan has not much hurried I have made him transcribe the most material letters on engine business which will serve to show you what is doing here and saves me the trouble of reciting them you'll see that Hartley can't come and therefore if the Betis ever arrived I think you should write to write or send me address for I am sure you must stand in need of assistance and I would never have you sacrificed your health your peace or your interest for the humour of any man eight will waste the remains of the summer too much to exchange letters with right and therefore to do conclude if the goods arrived to send for him or let me send for him the best explanation is an actual trial he can do us no harm it's no good the more our engine is known the more it will be in demand please to send us copies of the charges and accounts of bills delivered to wheel virgin that we may make our books conform
William Crowther vessel was sent to the Birmingham Wharf the 20th June and Pritchard and Barlow advised of it Jonathan Turner sent the exact measures of William crane verse cylinder sometimes since and I sent a copy of them to Mr dearman whom I called upon today when he was out however I will in my next send you the state of his order and likewise those of Bilston where I suppose you ordered will virgin steam pipes we should keep an order book IE orders issued by us with the name of the place or person in the margin that is to execute them by which we canmore readily see the state of them and at all times I will write this night 2 fretful to know if the pole dice pipes are yet puts on board about and what part of the orders are yet something and will advise you in my next I have heard no news lately from bersham N Seaton but have wrote to both pray what is the story of the splits in inder at dolcoath I never heard anything of it I think you should get as much of an account paid as possible before they the adventurers are crowded with bills from Wilkinson and colebrook down Mr Rathbone told me he had ordered an account to be sent us 4 wheel virgin having D betters who ordered the goods for them but I desired he would send it to the mind I suppose he will I'm sorry to hear that end downs is intended to go on but I have no faith that it will particularly as doctor W is concerned however let us consider ourselves as the servants of the public and to attend their call and answering last nevertheless I think we may silently strife it's in the birth in Wilkinson's account which I likely settled with him he has charged us with two flipper box and two brass stops for one Lochhead with carriage etc 19 lbs four shillings 10 pence second where are they as they were returned from 1 Lochhead he will not pay us instant £2.15 shillings 8 pence for the £20 worth of bricks we paid Wilkinson for long ago and which Mr. Edwards refused to pay us as he had paid Mr Wilkinson Wilkinson ascent in the Betis 9000 bricks at 30 lbs thirteen is 10 pence river freight at 2 LB zero shillings and six pence and horse hire 4 shillings 15 lbs four inches in six months and we have paid Hugh Jones for some further expenses to be levied upon all the goods last sentence where I was at broseley Wilkinson and I rode by onions is new boring mill which we both seemed surprised at and he remarked that it would be better not to put the engine trade into every found as heads as he had made conveniences for doing both founders and Smiths work and would have a boring engine at Bradley and all other conveniences of engine trade might require a reproached ray bone with not being able to this pettite their own work without committing more for they have not yet cast their own great cylinder and also in want of an engine at Magdalene would where they have lace blundering great expense I have built their great engine house up to the wall plate and it seems well done I saw that new forge set to work but there triangle a so badly applied that they'd loose 1/3 of their power and that wrens nest they lose 75% of the engine power although they have an overshot wheel which they are going to take down and apply an iron undershot the engine works 5 minutes to supply the forge 2 minutes and yet the power of their engine is more than sufficient to work such a foliage I believe that I have informed myself of all the data necessary for a forge right it is proposed to erect for Wilkinson at Willy 2 engines 27 inch diameter we have 7 feet strokes and there we have to work a hammer 600 white with a four-star would raise it between two and three feet high if not rebounded by the rabbit to make 120 strokes per minute and also to work another hammer about 200 weight with the same speed working some prefers the tilting before the lifting forge and indeed it has some conveniences over it which time will not now permit me to explain it being 10:00 as there is no satisfying Wilkinson without erecting a forge for him and as it is better to experiment with his money and character than our own and as something will not be exposed or exaggerated by him I think he is the most proper person to begin with at all events your reputation is out of the question if you leave it to us without your advice boy the boy will be very acceptable we propose to make the whole framing or harnessing at the forge all of cast iron with an block 10 tonnes weight so that all the powers of the machine will act as in a rolled frame or a fly press within itself pray let us know your general opinion of them and I will send you a particular drawing of my ideas I think the double cylinder will make the best forge and the elliptic the best cornmeal both of which I hope you will include in your specification intensive right to the Lieutenant someone and Troy if I can't rouse him as his folly grows serious I pray for the continuance of your health and your families remaining always dear Sir yours most affectionately Matthew Boulton
