LevelSeries
Date1818—1819
DescriptionMemoranda, sketches and diagrams relating to the steam boat Caledonia, from 1818 and 1819. The Caledonia was built by James and Charles Wood and James Barclay of Glasgow in 1815. James Watt Jr. and M. R. Boulton bought the boat from her original owners, The Caledonia Steam Boat Co., in May 1817, and replaced her existing engines with the 14 horse Boulton Watt & Co. side lever engines. The boat was used for trials and demonstrations of the Boulton Watt & Co. engines, including a voyage across the Channel and up the Rhine with James Watt Jr. aboard. She was sold in 1819 and went to Copenhagen.

For drawings of the Caledonia see Portfolio 5/1243.
