For Shadwell Water Works. Pumping engine, Shadwell, London. The engine was of a similar design to that for Chelsea Water Works [see Portfolio 5/1103], with which it shared several drawings. According to a later pencil note on the 1777 section, experiments on expansive working were carried out with this engine in 1778. The company bought a second engine similar to this one in 1784 [see Portfolio 5/1102]. The engineer John Foulds proposed the renovation of the engine in 1798, when the company also bought a double-acting crank engine with a 21? cylinder [see Portfolio 5/1101]. Henry Hazleton split the drawings between this portfolio and No. 1101, but they have all now been united here.
