| Description | Water Works Engines (2 items). 1105. York Buildings Water Works, London. Circa 1780 [?]. 2 items. Single-acting engine, with 40 inch cylinder, 8 foot stroke, chain connection. Engine never built [?]. General section of the engine and boiler, plan of the engine and boiler marked "Plan of intd. York Building Engine". Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 2. For the York Buildings Water Works. Projected pumping engine, York Buildings, London. It is unclear when these drawings were made. A book was opened for an engine of these dimensions in 1778, and was later numbered "2" by John Southern. However these drawings appear to be later than 1778; the York Buildings Water Works were making enquiries of Matthew Boulton for an engine in 1780 and the original portfolio cover noted the date as 1783. Presumably these later drawings were placed in the original 1778 book. No engine for the York Buildings Water Works appears in the List of Engines made at Soho until the 54 inch engine built in 1810-1811 [see Portfolio 5/1092].
