This was an unusual early type of boat engine first used for John Molson's Malsham in 1813-1814 [Portfolio 5/1240b], and used for this boat and the Lake Ontario steamer ordered by William Hodgson & Co. [see Portfolio 5/1213]; the drawings for the two Ontario engines were placed in the same book. The piston drove two cranks and fly wheels by means of a cross-bar and long side rods. It was also connected to an air pump beam. See also: 4/95 (Engine Order Book No. 9). |
