Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 525. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 310. For Robert Fulton, New York. Fulton was in New York when he ordered this engine in 1810. He initially ordered a 26 inch cylinder, but this was later increased to a 28 inch. Its arrangement was based closely on the engine made for him in 1804 [see Portfolio 5/1244a]. However it was never delivered to him, and in Jun. 1825 it was converted to a rotative beam engine, with the beam and parallel motion of a 30 horse engine. This engine was not for Fulton, who had died in 1815. The List of Engines made at Soho describes this engine as a 26 horse. See also: 4/93 (Engine Order Book No. 7). |
