For H. M. Post Office, Dover Station. These two boats, built by Graham of Harwich, were originally fitted with 25 horse engines made by Maudslay Sons & Field. Boulton Watt & Co. supplied various other parts, including new cylinders and slide valves to increase the power of the engines in 1836. Crusader was re-named Charon and Salamander was re-named Beaver in 1837 when the Navy took over the Post Office packet fleet. Henry Hazleton allocated separate portfolio numbers to both boats, despite the fact that their drawings were not originally kept separately; Crusader was Pf. 1249, and Salamander was Pf. 1250.
