14 horse power double-acting sun & planet engine, with 20 inch cylinder, 5 foot stroke, parallel motion. Engine formerly belonged to Richard Gorton of Cuckney.

Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 204. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 54, 304.

For Cardrew Downs Mine. The engine was made in 1787 for Richard Gorton of Thomas Gorton & Son, Mansfield, for their cotton mill and small wares manufactory at Cuckney in Nottinghamshire; the original drawings were kept in Book No. 93. The engine was sold to Cardrew Downs Mine in 1793, and a new set of drawings made and placed in Book No. 204. According to the List of Engines made at Soho, the engine began work at Cardrew Downs in Jun. 1794 and was stopped in Mar. 1796.
