For Matthew and James Bateson. Cotton mill, Wortley, near Leeds. The agreement was signed on 1 Nov. 1796, but the engine was countermanded during 1797. Apart from the four here, the only other drawing that was made was one of the working gear, which was crossed out and used for a reverse drawing of Hodgsons Capstick & Co.'s boiler in 1800 [see Portfolio 5/140]. On 1 Nov. 1797 Boulton & Watt sent the Batesons a bill for the expenses incurred in having the agreement drawn up, the drawings done and travelling expenses, but no mention was made of any materials for the engine. [Business Letter Book Jul 1797-Jul. 1798]. Either no materials had been made, or they were re-used in other engines.
