Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 270.
For John Hodgson and company. The firm wrote to Boulton & Watt on 10 Jan. 1797, ordering a 16 horse power engine, and John Southern duly opened Book 270 and entered it in his List of Books. However their next letter of 24 Jan. was less definite, saying that the firm would not proceed until they had an idea of the full cost. Matthew Robinson Boulton replied at the end of Jan. [Business Letter Book Jul. 1797-Jul. 1798] saying that Boulton & Watt considered the order definite, and were "awaiting further advice." The engine does not appear to have been proceeded with. This may be the same Hodgson & Co. who bought John Brockliss' 8 horse engine [see Portfolio 5/40].
