For Robert Blakiston. Brewery and flour mill, Sunderland. This engine was ordered for Blakiston by one Robert Hodgson of Sunderland and the millwright / engineer Thomas Dudgeon, and John Southern duly opened Book 274. However on 16 Jun. 1797 Dudgeon wrote that Blakiston wished to defer the engine as he was having trouble raising money. James Watt Jr. wrote back for Boulton & Watt on 22 Jun. 1797 [Business Letter Book Aug. 1796-Jul. 1797] saying that Boulton & Watt considered that the engine was countermanded. The majority of the engine had been made, but Watt Jr. thought that it could easily be transferred to another customer. However Blakiston was to be charged for the drawings and for the rotative shaft, which could not be re-used. The coloured original drawings in this portfolio were never sent away.
