For McConnel & Kennedy. Cotton mill, Manchester. Frequently spelt "McConnell". The power was increased in 1798 by the addition of a cylinder from a 20 horse engine which had been made for Wilkinson Holdforth & Co. of Leeds. The redundant 16 horse cylinder was intended for James Lees in 1799 [see Portfolio 5/182] but was not given to him as he altered his order to a 20 horse. It was eventually used for a 16 horse crank engine for James Kennedy in 1800 [see Portfolio 5/291]. McConnel & Kennedy sold this engine in 1805 and replaced with a "very peculiar" crank engine [see Portfolio 5/303b].
