For Thomas Wilkinson, Joseph Holdforth and Richard Paley. Cotton mill, Leeds. The firm is often referred to as "Holdforth & Co." or "Holdforth Wilkinson & Paley", but they signed themselves Wilkinson Holdforth & Co. The Catalogue of Engines says that this engine was not erected. However, the firm had originally ordered a 20 horse power crank engine [see Portfolio 5/255] and it was that engine that was not erected. The firm began having doubts in Jun. 1797 about whether a 20 horse would be adequate to replace their 50 inch engine made by Sturges & Co., and by Sep. they were enquiring about a more powerful engine, eventually settling on 36 horses. This engine was erected by Gavin McMurdo in Apr. 1798.
