For Thomas Hope. Cotton mill, Stockport. This engine was originally ordered by Joseph Sykes of Stockport. Sykes appears to have tenanted Hope's first engine, a 12 horse [see Portfolio 5/154] until Oct. 1798, when Hope took it back. At some point between Nov. 1798 and Mar. 1799, this engine was also assigned to Thomas Hope.
