For James Lees of Manchester. Cotton mill, Ancoats, Manchester. Lees originally ordered a 16 horse engine, but changed the order to a 20 horse at some point after the framing drawings had been prepared. According to Engine Order Book No. 1, it was originally intended to use some items, including the cylinder, from McConnel & Kennedy's 16 horse engine [see Portfolio 5/151] which were left over following its increase to 20 horse power.
