Description4 horse power single-acting sun & planet engine, with 16 inch cylinder, 4 foot stroke. Power later increased to 8 horses.

Includes general view of the engine, plans and sections of the engine, framing, boiler and seating, and the barrels and winding spiral; working gear - coloured reverse plans and front and side views, marked "from Harris"; fly wheel brake; shafts, bearer bars, wheels; pulley and spur nut dated Apr. 1788; rough sketches, notes and calculations for the barrels and winding spiral - these include notes marked "Notes from Mr. Wilkes of Measham, 24 Nov. 1786" in John Southern's hand, letter from Thomas Jewsbury dated Measham, 10 Mar. 1787 describing Sir Roger Newdigate's water-powered winding apparatus, sketch of Sir Roger Newdigate's winding apparatus, and notes marked "No. 2 Wilkes's gin motion" in James Watt's hand, circa 25 Jan. 1788.
