100 horse power crank engine, with 48 inch cylinder, 8 foot stroke, parallel motion, cast iron beam, cast iron connecting rod.

[Because this engine underwent so many changes during the planning, and because the drawings are so numerous, they have been arranged slightly differently to the other portfolios. Drawings of the engine house and engine are listed first, chronologically, then the component drawings, again chronologically. All the drawings are uncoloured reverse copies and bear letter codes unless otherwise noted.]

Section and ground plan of engine house, showing layout of engine, Oct. 1800; section and ground plan of engine house, showing layout of engine, Jan. 1801; general view of the engine, plan of the engine showing 3 boilers, Apr. 1801.

Component drawings, 1800: beam - drawing of a skeleton beam and a plate beam on the same sheet; spur wheels; plan of the cylinder, air pump and condenser

Component drawings, 1801: memorandum and rough sketches about alterations to the beam and cylinder (sent to the Foundry); beam - plate beam, with drawing of plate that goes across the engine house attached; nozzles, with a drawing for Carron Iron Works attached; plummer block and main gudgeon, with drawing of gland and supports for crank shaft plummer blocks from 1803 attached; steam and eduction pipes; top of connecting rod and steady pipes for beam; cylinder - plans and components (drawings GPO for the Carron Iron Works Sep. 1801 and HQH for a 48 inch double-acting cylinder Feb. 1803, possibly for the "Alteration Engine" were based on this drawing); plans of the air pump and condenser - original and reverse copy; fly wheel - original and reverse copy, and small uncoded sketch; plummer block pillars - original and reverse copy; parallel motion (Drawing HMU for Ocker Hill, 1802 was based on this drawing) and components; fly wheel shaft; plummer block for nozzles - original and reverse copy; working gear - front and side views, parts of working gear, eccentric circle and cam shaft, front view of nozzles etc.; crank - original and reverse copy; eccentric circles; eccentric circles and wheel for eccentric circles; supports for beams of mill; eccentric circle.

Also the following letters, sketch plans etc.: Rough sketches of iron beam designs; "Sketch of Salford Twist Co. new engine house as proposed", showing 4 boilers; sketch showing old engine, old and new mills and method of supplying new engine with injection water; letter from George Lee to John Southern dated Manchester, 26 Aug. 1800, with details of the engine house; plan and section of the engine house, marked "with Mr. Lee's letter of 26 Dec. 1800"; plan of the engine house and engine and section of the premises, showing boilers, connections to millwork etc., 5 Jan. 1801 (the section also shows the door to the engine house marked "Ixion" on the lintel); letter from George Lee to James Watt Jr. dated Manchester, 25 Jan. 1801, with sketch plan of boiler arrangement.

Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 393.

For the Salford Twist Co. Flax mill [?], Salford. The firm later became Philips Wood & Lee, and then Philips & Lee. George Lee ordered this engine to power the firm's new mill, which was located alongside the old one and may have been for flax spinning, in 1800. The initial plan was for a 60 or 62 horse engine, but the entry in Engine Order Book No. 3 dated 20 Aug. 1800 was for a 70 horse engine. The order was altered to a 100 horse power engine with a 48 inch cylinder circa Feb. 1801. The firm appear to have called this engine "Ixion". This engine was omitted from the Catalogue of Old Engines.

Published references: Dickinson & Jenkins, p. 172, 189, 203. Dickinson & Jenkins refer to the drawings of the eccentric circles and the beam, but ascribe them to the 1799 30 horse power engine, when in fact they were for the 100 horse power engine.
