Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 265. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 102.

For Thomas Wilkinson, Joseph Holdforth and Richard Paley. Cotton mill, Leeds. The firm is often referred to as "Holdforth & Co." or "Holdforth Wilkinson & Paley", but they signed themselves Wilkinson Holdforth & Co. The Catalogue of Old Engines mistakenly identifies this as a 36 horse power engine. This 20 horse was the engine that Wilkinson Holdforth & Co. originally ordered, and it appears that most of the materials were delivered. The engine erector William Brunton was with the firm in Jun. 1797, and reported that they had doubts as to whether this engine would be sufficient to replace their 50 inch engine made by Sturges & Co. By Sep. the firm were enquiring about a larger engine, eventually settling on a 36 horse engine [see Portfolio 5/157]. The cylinder from this engine was used to increase the power of McConnel & Kennedy's engine [see Portfolio 5/151].
