For McConnel & Kennedy. Cotton mill, Manchester. This engine replaced the sun & planet engine which McConnel & Kennedy had bought in 1797 [see Portfolio 5/151]. Engine Order Book 6 describes this engine as "very peculiar" - the cylinder was the standard diameter for a 30 horse engine, but was made 1 foot shorter in height. Likewise the piston rod and nozzles had to be made 1 foot shorter than the usual 30 horse patterns. The beam was of the size usually made for 20 horse engines, but strengthened. Henry Hazleton omitted this engine from the Catalogue of Old Engines, and it appears not to have had a dedicated Drawing Office Book. The section and plan and the drawings of the nozzles, working gear and steam case were found among the Miscellaneous Drawings, while the other drawings were found among the drawings for the 45 horse engine [see Portfolio 5/303a]. |
